![]() ![]() ![]() To become the mother of the Saviour, Mary “was enriched by God with gifts appropriate to such a role.” The angel Gabriel at the moment of the annunciation salutes her as “full of grace” (Luke 1:28). Note: It’s available to us because of what Jesus did for us on the cross, not because we’ve earned it! We haven’t earned it! Mary received her grace because of what Jesus was going to do on the cross. GRACE is all the gifts of God, both natural and supernatural, which He provides to us because of His mercy. Mary benefited first of all and uniquely from Christ’s victory over sin: she was preserved from all stain of original sin and by a special grace of God committed no sin of any kind during her whole earthly life ( Catechism para. 5:19-20.) Furthermore many Fathers and Doctors of the Church have seen the woman announced in the “Proto-evangelium” as Mary, the mother of Christ, the “new Eve”. ![]() The Christian tradition sees in this passage an announcement of the “New Adam” who, because he “became obedient unto death, even death on a cross”, makes amends super-abundantly for the disobedience, of Adam. The Catechism of the Catholic Church builds on this: “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel” (Genesis 3:15 NIV).
